Anybody's Game: Kathryn Johnston, the First Girl to Play Little League Baseball, by Heather Lang

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–4—Kathryn "Tubby" Johnston wants nothing more than to play baseball—and has the skills to do it. The only problem: it's 1950 and girls aren't allowed to play. So the trailblazer disguises herself as a boy and makes the team. In this picture book biography, Lang doesn't leave baseball lovers stranded on base as game-related terminology is sprinkled throughout. Puglesi's digital artwork adds depth to the text, showing strong emotions on the characters' faces and containing fun hidden gems, especially for Yankees fans (notice the magazines and posters). The text works nicely with the illustrations and would make for a good one-on-one read. The back matter is rather slight. Lang includes an author's note, which explains the legal fight for girls to play Little League, and a time line. Readers are told in the acknowledgements that sources can be found at the author's website. While Lang swings for the fences, she settles for a solid double. VERDICT Best for the baseball-obsessed, and a second purchase where Little League is popular.—Kerri Williams, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

"Lang tells the tale in a direct and sympathetic manner, without maudlin sentimentality or anger, instead stressing Kathryn's love of baseball and her strength of character." —Kirkus Reviews"Readers will admire [Kathryn's] grit and determination—particularly when she demands that her mother cut off her long braids so she can try out for Little League as 'a boy.'" —Publishers Weekly"In this picture book biography, Lang doesn’t leave baseball lovers stranded on base as game-related terminology is sprinkled throughout. This book brought back a lot of memories. Being a boy, I can remember only boys playing baseball. I'm sure Kathryn Johnston was a good ballplayer, because she was able to make the team. I'm sure it took a lot of guts to cut her hair, change her name, and then go to the ball field as a boy. The story is well written, and the pictures are fantastic.I have two 11 year old granddaughters (twins). When they wanted to play baseball two years ago, they just told their parents and they were signed up the next day to play. "Anybody's Game" sure brings out the difference in then and now.

I was so impressed with this book, that I recommended my Soroptimist Club sponsor a book signing with the author and Kathryn Johnston. The event was a huge success and an enormous inspiration to the hundreds of children and adults who attended. Bravo to author, Heather Lang and Kathryn "Tubby Johnston" Massar, the first girl to play Little League! This book should be in every library and in every elementary school, so children will find the courage to follow their dreams!

What an inspiring story. Disney should do this movie!

The important point in this story is not only Kathryn's persistence but her success in proving that gender should not determine opportunities. The reality that this young girl's year of participation was followed by two decades of gender-limited participation underscores the need for persistence of effort and voices in every era. Author Heather Lang's bios are thoroughly researched. In this one she engaged directly with the ground-breaking Johnston and back matter includes more about Johnston's later involvement with baseball as well as a timeline of women and girls in baseball.

This should be shared in all elementary classrooms. It's an inspirational story and so well written. Makes for a great mentor text.

Another great biography by Heather Lang. Good for anyone who loves the game of baseball. Gave a copy to my college niece who plays softball and she shared it with her teammates. Everyone loved it!
