If you like history in the first person you will enjoy this book.It gives a clear picture into the life of the indians and traders in the North Western plains/mountains.It is not embellished and it is not white washed.The wasted animals - buffalo, beaver and others is not surprising, we've heard it before. But we have not heard both sides at the same time. The lack of concern of both sides is surprising.Stories of the alcohol trade and gambling are eye opening.It is really a series of stories, well written and interesting.
This story shows that the Indians had faults just like everyone else, even though their lifestyle was so different. A story where one man thinks he knows better than the accepted rules. What a good story!
A wonderful story I remembered from my teen years and found as enjoyable and as thought-provoking upon a rereading thirty years later. James W Schultz and those who told him their stories certainly knew the best of the storytelling craft!
JAMES WILLARD SCHULTZ DID A SUPERB JOB OF TELLING HIS STORY ABOUT A BLACKFOOT FAMILY AND THEIR TRIALS AND SUFFERING BECAUSE THE FATHER WAS TOO FULL OF PRIDE AND EGO. HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN FOLLOWED HIM FAITHFULLY AS HE FOOLISHLY LEFT THEIR TRIBE. DURING THEIR TRAVELS, THEY SUFFERED HEARTACHE, HARDSHIP AND WENT FROM BEING PROSPEROUS MEMBERS OF THEIR TRIBE TO POVERTY STRICKEN BEGGARS. THERE IS MORE TO THE STORY, AND IT IS WELL WORTH THE READ.
As a lover of all history I enjoy reading new material. As a native(albeit a small amount) I enjoyed this book. I actually read it quickly as I didn't want to put it down. An intriguing read.
